Who are asylum seekers?

Some of your students may be seeking asylum in Australia and living
in the community on temporary visas until their case has been processed.
It is possible that you are not aware of this: asylum seekers are often mistaken
for international students.

An asylum seeker is a person who:

  • Has had to leave their country because it is too dangerous to stay there; and
  • Is in danger in their country because they are being seriously harmed or at risk of
serious harm due to either their political opinion, religion, race, nationality or
    social group; and
  • Their government cannot or will not protect them from that serious harm.

For asylum seeker students, the nature of their experience and their visa category
may affect their ability to study at different times.
